Name | Umm Al Maradim |
Country | Kuwait |
Description | Umm al Maradim is an Island located at the extreme south of Kuwait's marine borders near the junction with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Umm Al-Maradim is surrounded by deep waters which enable ships to land directly at its shores - an advantage which is not available on most Kuwaiti islands. Its length east to west is less than a mile (1.6 kilometer) and its width is about a third of a mile (540 meters). It is an oval island with a sand cape. Pearl oysters breed around the Umm Al-Maradim seabed. In the past, ships sailed for pearl diving in the morning and returned by night to the island. So the island was crowded with the ships' crews, divers and pearl traders who flocked to purchase the pearl harvest from the ships' captains. The island is usually full of migratory and sedentary birds, especially seagulls. During the rainy season, it is covered with green grass which makes it a beautiful place for those who enjoy outings amidst the splendor of nature. Umm Al-Maradim was the first Kuwaiti land to be liberated from the Invasion of Kuwait in 1991. On its territory the Kuwaiti flag was hoisted again proclaiming the defeat of aggression and the restoration of legality. The island is uninhabited except for some public buildings such as a lighthouse and a police station |

Name | Vallée d'Iherir |
Country | Algeria |
Description | UNESCO World Heritage site. A high valley (1100m-1400m) in the center of a limestone Saharan plateau characterized by intermittent streams, lakes, and marshes, freshwater springs, and subterranean karst hydrological systems. The isolated nature of the site has led to remarkable evolutionary phenomena, described as (at the same time, a laboratory and a museum of the process of evolution), particularly for species which have been best able to resist the desertification of the area, such as lizards, serpents, and four species of fish. Basic palm and fig culture is practiced near the site by the Tuareg community on terraces above the valley floor, and some raising of vegetables takes place in areas shaded by trees. The rocky mountain walls bear rich pictorial evidence of some of the first human inhabitants of the Sahara; this has encouraged fairly significant tourism, which, however, was drastically diminished between 1992 and 2000 and is only recently beginning to recover. |

Name | Vallée de l'Oued Soummam |
Country | Algeria |
Description | Situated in the northeast of the country, the site is the furthest point downstream in the Soummam catchment. It is characterized by permanent rivers, temporary marshes in the mountain regions, and a coastal lagoon. It is of particular importance for recharging the groundwater and regulation of flow, and the upstream sections control the risk of flooding further downstream. The site also supports the vulnerable European Otter (Lutra lutra), which has over the years disappeared completely from the northwest and is in decline in the central and eastern regions. Other fauna supported are 119 species of birds, 38 species of mammal, amphibians such as the Sahara Frog (Rana saharica) and reptiles such as the viper (Natrix Maura). The main land uses are for agriculture, olive plantations, and small village settlements. The threats facing this site are the result of unsustainably using the resources of the site to support the income-generating activities previously mentioned. |

Name | Wadi Al Alaqi |
Country | Egypt |
Description | This Wadi is a large dry river that used to rise from the Red Sea hills especially Elba mountain. After the construction of the High Dam and filling lake Naser with water, the water flowed into Wadi Al -Alaqi and it became part of the Lake. Since the water level became low in the lake, the water has gone down off a great part of the Wadi and accordingly it became uncovered with water. It has greenery, its soil is rich and it is a kind of pasture for animals. Wadi Al -Alaqi is a good example for dry lands, however it exhibits an astounding picture of botanical variety. 92 species of plants have been reported. |
