Name Omayed
Country Egypt
Description Omayed Biosphere Reserve is situated close to Alexandria and belongs to the biome of warm deserts and semi-deserts of the Western Mediterranean region. Low calcareous rocky ridges (ancient dunes) altering with depressions characterize the relief. Three major physiographic systems can be distinguished: coastal systems, ridges and depressions, and inland plateau systems. The Omayed Biosphere Reserve was extended to an area of 70,000 hectares in 1998. The Egyptian authorities wanted to change the objectives of the site from being just an 'experimental research area' to encompass all the main objectives of a biosphere reserve and in particular to represent the landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation of the region. There are many different tribes in the area, which supports some 5,500 people (1997). Being a biosphere reserve, the area is expected to serve as a site for sustainable development of natural resources by rationalizing ecotourism, rangeland management, propagating multipurpose woody species, and promoting local industries. It also has an important function in long-term ecological monitoring.

Name Oued Chbeyka
Country Morocco
Description The site comprises the estuary and lower 4 km of a Saharan wadi, the Oued Amma Fatma, which cuts through the surrounding hamada plateau to form a steep-sided valley approximately 600–800 m wide. The wadi is partially blocked near its outlet by a road bridge and dyke which have resulted in the formation of a small freshwater basin and marsh. The banks of the estuary and the sheltered cove between the coastal cliffs are sandy. Vegetation consists of arid scrubland and some aquatic marsh.

Name Oum Laagareb
Country Algeria
Description Oum Lâagareb Ramsar Site is one of the largest remaining floodplain peatlands in the region, and supports plant communities which are particularly rare in Algeria, notably of Ash Fraxinus angustifolia and Alder Alnus glutinosa trees, and is an important locality also for Bay Laurel Laurus nobilis. Vegetation richness is influenced by the wetlands physic-chemical characteristics of medium acidity, richness of organic matter and water flows. The wetlands supports a range of animal species, notably Otter Lutra lutra (extremely rare in the area), the Endangered Poiret's Newt Pleurodeles poireti, found only in north-East Algeria, and European Pond Turtle Emys orbicularis, and various waterbirds use the forested areas. The site is threatened by excessive water-pumping by the local community for irrigation.
