Name Detwah Lagoon
Country Yemen
Description The site is a coastal lagoon on the northwestern side of Socotra Island, an island famously known as 'a jewel of biodiversity' in the Arabian Sea. Consisting of a tidal inlet open to the sea, it is surrounded by sand dunes and 400m high limestone and granite cliffs. The relatively pristine sea grass habitat provides ideal refuge from predators, acting as a feeding area and shelter for juvenile fish, and it is the only site on the Island where the vulnerable Leopard Stingray Himantura uarnak and the near-threatened Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray Taeniura lymma have been recorded. It is considered an important roosting and feeding area for waterbirds, with 32 species recorded of which 10 are resident breeding species and 16 wintering species. The endangered Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus and the vulnerable Socotra cormorant Phalacrocorax nigrogularis breed in the site. Flora endemic to Socotra can be found including Croton socotranus and Jatropha unicostata.

Name Dibeen Forest Reserve
Country Jordan
Description Dibeen Forest Reserve extends over 8.5 km2 of mountainous terrain, covering an area of pristine pine-oak habitat (Pinus halipensis-Quercus calliprinos). These Aleppo pines are some of the oldest and largest in the Kingdom, and are the defining characteristic of this landscape, representing the southeastern geographical limit of this forest type. Dibeen is the driest part of the world in which the Aleppo pines are known to grow naturally, with an average rainfall of around 400mm per year. Dibeen was ranked as the top priority site for conservation in the 1998 Protected Areas review, after being overlooked in the original 1979 review, as studies have revealed that Dibeen is one of the best remaining examples of the original pine-oak forest cover in the region and supports at least 17 threatened species, like the Persian Squirrel, and other globally significant biodiversity. The entire forest of Dibeen extends over an area of 60 km2, varying in altitude from 500m to 1000m above sea level. The forest is spread over steep to very steep slopes of limestone or chalky limestone rock types. The physical and age structure of the forest as a whole is remarkably varied with trees of widely different ages and sizes and a distinct under-canopy in many areas. This variety is aided by the presence of wadis, which provide different aspects, moisture levels and soil conditions throughout the forest.

Name Djerba Bin El Ouedian
Country Tunisia
Description This site is composed of the southern part of the island of Djerba (514 Km2) and the Bin El Ouedian wetland centered on the Al Kantara causeway to the mainland. Djerba has seen a rapid increase in tourism in the past 40 years, carrying with it important human pressures, which include an excessive collection of shellfish, pollution and the removal of sand for local construction purposes. Bin El Ouedian, on the other hand, constitutes a rare portion of the island that has remained almost pristine until now. The influence of the Mediterranean tide, coupled with a characteristic marine hydrology, play a dominant role in the dynamics of this wetland, which supports a remarkable fauna of (shell)fish and waterbirds. The area also contains important archaeological sites such as the old fort of Bordj El Kastil and the Roman site of Méninx.

Name Djurdjura
Country Algeria
Description This biosphere reserve is situated in the Djurdjura Mountains (800 to 2,300 meters above sea level) at the Mediterranean coast in north-east Algeria and is exposed to both Mediterranean and more continental climate in the south. Depending on exposition and elevation, habitats are Mediterranean evergreen, deciduous and coniferous forests as well as alpine meadows. Because of the big climatic and topographic differences, the area is very rich in species diversity hosting a number of endemic species. For instance, the M'Zaris Forest is the only habitat of the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena). The relict species black pine (Pinus nigra) has been studied for its natural regeneration potential. The 6,000 inhabitants in area (1996) are primarily of Berber origin with closely-knit mountain communities having preserved traditional societal codes of conduct and ethics. The biosphere reserve seeks to show how a balanced and rational use of natural resources by agriculture, pasturalism, forestry and tourism can go in line with conservation. Socio-economic studies have been carried out on these topics with a view to assessing local people's needs. Mass tourism is rejected in order to promote tourism reflecting the local cultural heritage, for example in its architectural style.

Name Dongonab Bay-Marsa Waiai
Country Sudan
Description An expanse of coastline including coral reefs, mangroves, off-shore islands, soft-bottom mud flats, sand beaches and hard bottom rocky shores in addition to salt-marshes, sabkha and khor basins. As a result the site is rich in biological diversity and provides support to various threatened species and provides permanent habitats, breeding grounds and areas of refuge for various fish and shrimp. The Bottlenose Dolphin and various shark species have also been recorded within the site. The main land uses within the site are animal breeding, mainly of camels, goats and sheep; fisheries; oyster culture; and tourist activities such as scuba diving. Potential threats arise from major land use changes: a proposed shrimp and fish farming industry project along the southern stretch of coastline, livestock fodder production and ice plants, and overgrazing by nomads and camel herders, as well as declining rainfall. The site comprises a National Marine Park of the same name as well as the Senganeb Atoll NMP, and Marine Protected Area status is in the works for the Mukkawar Island area.

Name Dunes littorales
Country Morocco
Description In physical geography, a dune is a hill of sand built by either wind or water flow. Dunes occur in different shapes and sizes, formed by interaction with the flow of air or water. Most kinds of dunes are longer on the windward side where the sand is pushed up the dune and have a shorter (slip face) in the lee of the wind. The valley or trough between dunes is called a slack. A (dune field) is an area covered by extensive sand dunes. Large dune fields are known as ergs. Some coastal areas have one or more sets of dunes running parallel to the shoreline directly inland from the beach. In most cases, the dunes are important in protecting the land against potential ravages by storm waves from the sea.
