Description The site has been announced as the 3rd location in the UAE to be designated as a RAMSAR wetlands conservation site which means that it is now internationally recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the protection of wetland species. In particular there is one bird that is not only very rare but only breeds in 2 places on the peninsula. The Arabian White Collared Kingfisher (Halcyon Chloris Kalbaensis) is indigenous to this area and can only be found at Khor Kalba and 12km across the border in Oman as well. With just 50 breeding pairs present it is a very rare subspecies of this beautiful bird. The kingfisher eats mainly small crabs which can be found all over the mudflats and around the mangrove tree roots at low tide. Khor Kalba also has a population of Socotra Cormorants which are on the Red List as an internationally endangered species.
